Slow Gmail? chat check

Published by Simon under technology

Photo by Robert LlefiIs your Gmail slower than usual? If you don’t use chat, be sure to turn it off. You should notice a bit more speed in your Gmail loads. To check the status of chat, look at the very bottom of your screen directly under the statistics for how much (or little) of your Gmail storage is in use. If you see Turn Off Chat, click on it. If you see Turn On Chat, the chat function is already off.

Who will stop the SPAM?

Photo by Stefano BrivioStill getting SPAM? Getting more SPAM now than several months ago? Do you have too many legitimate messages going to SPAM? I recommend trying one of the following options.

Gmail. As noted in an earlier post, Gmail has the best SPAM filter around. It is extremely accurate. Many users now have all of their email accounts routed through Gmail to get the benefit of Gmail’s SPAM blocker. Gmail can be set up to send pop3 account mail as well. You still need an invitation to sign up for Gmail. Continue Reading »

Do your notes speak to you?

875404_a_hand_writing.jpgSummarize the last seminar or class you took in three sentences. How effective is your note-taking? The Cornell method of taking notes is effective not only for classes but for meetings and conference calls. If you are unfamiliar with it, check out the link for a website which has a good explanation as well as examples that can be downloaded. I find it effective to use the Cornell method along with an outline in its ‘note-taking area.’ Whatever method you choose, make sure it works for you. Good notes allow for quick review of a lot of information.

10 tech essentials for emergencies

Published by Simon under extracurricular, technology

Photo by Paul KeieherWhat do you need to make emergency situations more livable? You may want to add a few of these items to your emergency survival kits of food, water, blankets, etc. Here’s a slide show of ten tech tools that were found indispensable in the recent California fire evacuations.

If you live in an area which has tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding, fires or unknown future emergencies, you will find information about these items useful. The author figured out what worked and what didn’t work, why each item is needed, etc.

Take a look because some of the items can be used for day-to-day routines or outings. Ten tech essentials for emergency evacuation by Steve Kovsky at eWeek.

It’s due when??? Use a homework manager

Photo by Darren HesterHere’s a homework manager for students with a Mac. It’s called SchoolHouse 2, tracks everything for you and is free. Trackable are your reading, projects, papers, and grades (which can be calculated). As the site puts it, this way you’ll have no surprises at the end of the quarter/semester. You can look at everything due a week from Friday or every due date for a particular class.

I’ll be searching for a similar application for PC users. Stay tuned.

Please be sure you’re backing up your hard drive or printing out the information daily. The only thing worse than dogs eating homework is the fact that hard drives crash!

Published by Simon under Windows, technology

Photo by Procsilas MoscasMS Office 2007 uses the extension of DocX as a default to save Word documents. Unfortunately, unless one has MS Office 2007, these documents can not be opened automatically — at least not yet. Here are a few of the things you need to know. Continue Reading »
